Online Travel Booking Platforms (OTBPs): The Digitalization of Travel Commerce
Online Travel Booking Platforms (OTBPs), commonly referred to as Online Travel Agencies (OTAs), are e-commerce websites and mobile applications that allow consumers to research, compare, book, and pay for travel services—including flights, accommodations, car rentals, cruises, and activities—directly from their digital devices. These platforms act as intermediaries, aggregating inventory from thousands of suppliers and presenting it in a standardized, easily comparable format, thereby streamlining the travel planning process.
OTBPs rely heavily on Global Distribution Systems (Amadeus, Sabre, Travelport) for accessing airline inventory. A GDS is essentially a massive computer network that aggregates flight schedules, pricing, and availability from nearly all major airlines globally, allowing the OTBP to query this data instantly and process reservations.
